For how many years have you been running? I’ve been running for fun beginning about 5 years ago. I started ‘serious running’ – really training about 3 years ago. … Overview of Races: 5 marathons and 3 half-marathons -- the 2003 Law Enforcement Half Marathon, the 2003 Boston Marathon, the 2003 Chicago Marathon, the 2004 Miami Marathon, the 2004 Law Enforcement Half Marathon, the 2004 Chicago Marathon, the 2005 Arizona Rock and Roll Marathon, and the 2005 Run to Remember Half Marathon. Personal Best Race I ran my best marathon this year – in the Arizona marathon (2005) ….ran 4:11 – my previous best was 4:29:37 at the Chicago Marathon in 2003. What helped you get your personal best time (numbered list might help here)? So many variables affect an individual's personal best. For me what comes to mind is that my overall state of mind was very relaxed. I was well-trained physically, I had 4 weeks of massage leading up to the event, I had my coach (you) there the day before to run strides and give me confidence. I didn't talk too much about my goals although I definitely had a plan for the day. My attitude was to enjoy the day and do what my body was trained to do without obsessing about the finish. What were the greatest challenges (injuries, family issues, scheduling, etc.) you faced in training? It was a smooth training – no injuries, no major obstacles….it was more of a head game than anything. The challenge was just to feel confident that I could do better, that I could be faster. Words of wisdom for others… When you are involved in any kind of race remember to smile at some point; appreciate that you are able to run it all and "carpe diem "make the most of your day. The small stuff can potentially drag you down and away from the final purpose to finish as best you can on that day. So... Enjoy! Your next event? The 2005 Marine Corps Marathon! |
